Starting in fall 2025, Ozarks Technical Community College (Ozarks Tech) will offer a new Associate of Applied Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS), significantly expanding access to this high-demand healthcare career at an affordable cost.

Previously offered through Cox College as a bachelor’s degree, the sonography program will now be available at Ozarks Tech as an associate degree, making it more accessible and affordable to students in the region. This expanded access is a direct result of The Alliance for Healthcare Education, a partnership between Ozarks Tech, Missouri State University, Springfield Public Schools and CoxHealth aimed at addressing critical shortages in the healthcare workforce.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographer ranks #20 on U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best Healthcare Jobs list, one of 12 healthcare careers offered through Ozarks Tech’s Health Sciences Division to earn national recognition.

“This is a major step toward making healthcare careers more accessible in our region,” said Chancellor Hal Higdon. “We’re proud to offer a more affordable, faster path to a sonography career while meeting urgent workforce needs.”

Ozarks Tech’s DMS program accepts 20 students per year and stands out by offering certification in all three major sonography specialties—obstetrics, abdominal and vascular imaging—unlike most programs, which typically offer only two. Students can further expand their qualifications with fully online post-degree certificates in echocardiography, nuclear medicine and MRI.

Classes will be held in the Alliance Education Center, already equipped with ultrasound simulation labs and GE ultrasound machines. Renovations are underway to expand the space with a third lab and additional equipment.

“Students are eager and so are we,” said Dr. Aaron Light, Ozarks Tech dean of health sciences. “This program not only opens doors for our students but also strengthens the entire healthcare system in southwest Missouri.”
