Honor society to host workshop on competition in western culture

Ozarks Technical Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, will host a workshop examining the issues of competition in western culture and exploring alternate views of cooperative competition. The event, which will be held Saturday, November 17, will include three keynote speakers: Geshe Thupten Dorjee from the Tibetan Cultural Institute of Arkansas, Dr. Sidney Burris from the University of Arkansas, and Dr. David Light Shields from St. Louis Community College – Meramec.

The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the OTC Springfield Campus in Lincoln Hall, Room 211. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

“This workshop will present a new perspective on competition and provide practical instruction for living a compassionate and cooperative life that allows for personal excellence,” explained Steven Fritts, ASL Instructor and Phi Theta Kappa Co-Advisor.

Phi Theta Kappa honors students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and places its emphasis on leadership, service, scholarship and fellowship. Established in 1918, they are the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than 1.3 million members and 1,100 chapters worldwide. Ozarks Technical Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducts new members twice each year.
