Hollister, Mo. — Nursing students at Ozark Technical Community College’s Table Rock Campus will have the opportunity to work with several simulation manikins thanks to two generous grants from the Skaggs Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The grants, totaling more than $83,000, will fund the purchase of real-life nursing simulation manikins and associated training equipment at OTC Table Rock. A manikin is a model of the human body used to educate medical professionals.
“This is great news for our students, the healthcare providers that rely on our skilled graduates and for the Table Rock area economy,” said Cliff Davis, OTC Table Rock president. “Providing our citizens with advanced training opportunities will improve the health and wellness of our local communities.”
The Skaggs Foundation contributed $21,500 that will allow for the purchase of real-life simulation manikins and operating systems.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture allocated $61,778, through its Rural Business Development Grant, which will be used to purchase additional simulation training manikins and equipment to replicate a hospital setting at the Table Rock Campus.
The manikins will allow nursing students to obtain real-life, hands-on training in situations they could face once they become medical providers. The manikins can simulate human qualities that mirror working with patients in a clinical setting. Currently, nursing students must travel to the OTC Springfield Campus for training in specialty nursing subjects and to access real-life patient care simulation experiences. The equipment at the Table Rock campus makes that training much more accessible.
Additionally, local first responders, community members and high school students will have access to the manikins for training in life-saving techniques such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Beginning with this school year, all Missouri high school seniors are required to have 30 minutes of CPR training prior to graduation.
OTC Table Rock offers two nursing programs, the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) and the Practical Nursing Certificate. Those two programs train students to sit for the licensing exams to become Registered Nurses (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), respectively. The Table Rock Campus has the capacity to train 24 ASN students and 40 LPN students each year.
