The Missouri Community College Association honored Special Agent Sgt. Joseph M. Peters with its Distinguished Alumni Award at a ceremony in Branson this evening. The late Sgt. Peters earned a certificate in electronic media production from Ozarks Technical Community College and went on to serve in the United States Army in the Criminal Investigations Division. He was assigned to the Fifth Military Police Battalion in Vincennes, Italy.
On Oct. 6, 2013, Sgt. Peters lost his life when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on a mission in Afghanistan. It was his third deployment in support of the Global War on Terror.
Sgt. Peters was posthumously awarded numerous medals, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife, Ashley, and their son, Gabriel, and by his parents, Dennis and Debbie, who accepted the award on their son’s behalf at the ceremony.
