Role of gender in career choices to be explored

An exploration day for area high school students interested in programs considered non-traditional based on gender will be held at Ozarks Technical Community College’s Springfield campus on Thursday, February 25.  The all-day event is hosted by the College’s Breaking Traditions program and the Missouri Center for Career Education (MCCE).

Beginning at 9 a.m., the students will have opportunities for hands-on experience in a variety of programs at the College.  Female students will explore programs such as Welding Technology, Automotive Technology, Turf and Landscape Management, Networking Technology, and Industrial Control and Automation Technology, while male students will learn about programs including Early Childhood Education, Allied Health, and Culinary Arts. 

In the afternoon, participants will hear from OTC students currently pursuing careers through the Breaking Traditions program, including a male student in the Early Childhood Education program and a female student studying both Welding and Automotive Technology.

Operating under the umbrella of MCCE, the Breaking Traditions program focuses on students who are considering or pursuing careers that are non-traditional for their gender.  The program provides information and guidance in the areas of career awareness, exploration, and planning, as well as specialized workshops and financial assistance to students who are enrolled in one of OTC’s career/technical programs.  Breaking Traditions also provides financial assistance for students who are displaced homemakers and/or single parents.
