Two students from the automotive programs at Ozarks Technical Community College has won the annual Ford/AAA AutoSkills Contest, held recently in St. Louis. The students, Ellis Lutz from Central High School in Springfield and Tyler Jemes from Nixa High School, will now represent Missouri at the national competition in Detroit, Michigan, in June. This is the first time the College’s team has earned first place.
The contest, designed for high school seniors who are taking automotive courses, begins with a written qualifying test; the top two students from each qualifying institution then participate in the hands-on portion of the competition. The students are told in advance what type of vehicle will be used. This year, Republic Ford generously loaned the College a 2009 Ford Focus for the students to practice for the state competition.
