OTC’s American Sign Language department held a Silent Dinner on Thursday, April 30 from 6-8 p.m. in Lincoln Hall on the OTC Springfield Campus. More than 80 students, instructors, tutors and individuals from the deaf community were in attendance.

During dinner, attendees played sign language games and practiced conversational skills — voices were not allowed. Offenders were required to wear the “Silent Sombrero of Shame” until someone else was caught using their voice.

The department plans to host its next Silent Dinner in the fall. Instructors are also planning an American Sign Language Poetry Slam for the 2015-16 academic year.
