Volunteer positions are available for Ozarks Technical Community College’s Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) classes, which will be held this spring in the following counties: Greene, Stone, Taney, Christian, Webster, Polk, Dallas, and Laclede. Volunteer schedules vary by location. Most volunteers average 2-3 hours of work per week.
AEL volunteers assist instructors in preparing adults for the high school equivalency test (HiSet). Volunteers work one-on-one with students in a variety of academic subjects including math, language arts and reading. Volunteers may also assist AEL instructors with any clerical or record-keeping needs in the classroom.
AEL volunteers must possess a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma. Prior teaching experience is not required and free training is provided. Volunteers should also possess the following traits: patience, optimism, friendliness, a sense of humor, and the desire to make a difference in someone’s life.
Persons interested in becoming an AEL volunteer may contact Kathy Funk, literacy coordinator, at 417-447-8865 or funkk@otc.edu.
