Students who love computers, art and design are enrolling in Ozarks Technical Community College’s popular Graphic Design program.

One of the top 10 programs on campus based on enrollment, the program exposes students to various graphic techniques, everything from screen-printing to computer design to online publishing.

“We live in a visual world and a visual-design society,” said Cheryl Feller, a graphic design instructor. “People don’t want a plain, old trash can. They wan a colorful trash can.”

Feller said the program’s popularity is due in large part to allowing students to express themselves visually.

“Students are interested in the technology of today’s world and what it offers them in terms of expression. They want to come and try it out,” Feller said.

Amy Ricklefs of Fair Grove brought her interest in magazine page design with her from high school.

“I couldn’t get it out of my head and wanted to come to OTC to continue working on it. I really like the photo-editing software. I like page layout and would like to get into hospital magazine design work,” she said.

After graduation in May, Ricklefs would like to find work and also continue her studies in design at Drury University.

Feller said in order to prepare students for employment, the college keeps up with the never-ending equipment and software updates.

“We update on a regular basis and keep up with industry standards especially when it comes to software,” she said.

Olivia Ezell wants to graduate with a graphic design degree and transfer to Missouri State to study photography and design.

“The program teaches you to take your love and talent for art and transfer it into something you can communicate with,” she said.
